OVERVIEW
The Rome attractions tour starts early with the option of being picked up from your hotel if you are staying in central locations. Alternatively you can meet your expert guide directly at the the meeting point near Termini train station.
This morning tour is mainly on foot with included a lift from Piazza Navona to the Vatican with a private coach.
The Rome Highlights Tour begins with a short walk to Piazza della Repubblica [Republic’s Square] to see the Fountain of the Naiads with its marvellous sculptures from the 19th century and its water once originated directly from the Aqua Marcia aqueduct, the longest of the 11 aqueducts that provided water to the inhabitants of the ancient Rome.
Descend through Via Nazionale to reach one of Rome’s most iconic sights, the Trevi Fountain.
Bring a coin with you, as the tradition goes that throwing one in the Trevi Fountain ensures a return to Rome one day.
The right way of doing it is by throwing the coin from the right hand over the left shoulder.
After a short walk you will reach Piazza Colonna and just in front of Palazzo Chigi (the home of the Italian government), the Column of Marcus Aurelius dominates the rest of the square.
The tall victory column is a tribute to Emperor Marcus Aurelius war successes across the empire. The column is nearly 40 meters tall and made of 28 blocks of Carrara marble.
The Rome attractions tour continues and after the Government building you will pass by the Italian Senate and Parliament too on your way to the Pantheon.
Here you will stop for a visit to this former Roman temple, now turned church and resting site of some illustrious Italians, including two kings and the famous artist Raffaello.
Next stop: Piazza Navona, the home of Rome’s baroque architecture. Walk to the majestic Fountain of the Four Rivers by Bernini and admire the other fountains on the right (Moor Fountain) and the left (Fountain of Neptune).
From there a coach will take you to the other side of the river towards the Vatican, passing by Castel Sant’Angelo.
Hear from the guide about this other symbolic and impressive monument for another Emperor of Rome, Hadrian, who commissioned it as a mausoleum for himself and his family.
From there you will arrive in St.Peter’s Square where you will have the opportunity of visiting the symbol of Rome and learn from your guide about the history of the most important Basilica in the world and its treasures and art masterpieces.
The Rome attractions tour ends here, but if you would like to continue with an afternoon visit to the Colosseum, Roman Forum and other wonders from Imperial Rome, why not taking advantage of the ROME IN 1 DAY TOUR – COLOSSEUM + VATICAN + ALL TOP SIGHTS?
